sep2012 chapnews Light for Education – Vidya Deepa
The chapter continues to actively engage with Rotary Club Bangalore West in the Light for Education initiative under which final year students in villages with limited electricity supply are provided with re-chargeable LED lamps to help them spend more hours for exam preparation.  On 23 Jan 2013, the Chapter distributed School Bags and note books to the students of Government High School Yelliur in Devanahalli distirict.

This is the same School where solar powered LED lamps were distributed by the Chapter to those students some time back. The Chapter was extremely happy to hear that the students have found LED lamps to be very useful in preparing for their final board examinations.

This LED lamp distribution is a part of the initiative of Rotary Bangalore West (RBW). This initiative called Vidya Deepa was started 3 years back and aims to provide the Std X students with solar LED lamps to tackle the power situation in rural areas.
In this year itself, around 990 students have been given these lamps in 23 schools spread across 12 Taluks in Karnataka. This is a program of large proportion in which RBW gets help from Rotary clubs in the US and also Rotary foundation. (www.rotary.org/Foundation). In this program, PMI Bangalore Chapter has made not only financial contributions, but has also provided the project management & execution expertise. Chapter is planning to help RBW to evaluate this scheme by interacting with end users on this scheme. sep2012 chapnews
