Greetings from PMI Bangalore India Chapter!
 
The month of February heralded one of the most awaited sporting events for the cricket crazy nation like us. Arguably no other sport is as popular in India as Cricket- with media often spicing up the median coverage by glorifying, cricket is a nothing but a "religion" in our country.
The 2015 Cricket World Cup is the 11th Cricket World Cup, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from 14th February to 29th March 2015. 14 teams will play 49 matches in 14 venues. When the World Cup began, India definitely were not the strong contenders to defend the title. The critics were ruthless in pointing out India's toothless bowling attack and it's array of out-of-form batsmen struggling to get back their form in overseas condition. But things took an incredible turn in first two matches. The whole Indian team marshalled their cricketing talents and delivered two strong back to back wins. The way they beat their arch rival Pakistan in opening match was worthy of praise. This was followed by a historic win against strong South African team with a scarcely believable 130 runs. Winning over the minnows UAE by record 9 wickets to record third successive win looked like a non-effort by now. Now everyone is thinking India to be strong contender for retaining the title. In a team that does not have the stalwarts like Sachin, Saurav, Lakshman and Dravid, what was the secret sauce for such a monumental performance? I would say, one strong reason can be attributed to the captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The internet is full of articles on Dhoni's management style, from which corporates like us, can take a leaf from. I thought of highlighting some of his key leadership traits. Dhoni excelled in “Managing Success”, “Managing Pressure” and “Managing Focus”. Managing Success - Dhoni tasted success very early in his career but he never allowed it to go on his head. He handled it with level headedness and humility. In a corporate context, early success should not make us feel complacent. We need to continue executing our tasks thereby ensuring sustained success. Managing Pressure - Dhoni is often called the “Captain Cool”. By remaining cool under high pressure situation, especially during chasing aggressive strike rates during slog overs, he inspires confidence in his team members and he himself is able to perform well. In a corporate context, managing periods of high stress without losing our composure is the key to successful project outcome year after year. Managing Focus - Dhoni has never allowed himself to get perturbed by the IPL controversy and kept his focus intact. In a corporate context, it is vital for managers to stay positive and stay focused on the task at hand and avoid distractions. Whether India wins or not will be known by end of this month, but the very fact that India is in the hands of a great Leader, from whom we can learn many management lesson will certainly be a good reason for all of us to cheer about.
